What Makes Malawi Different
- The Viphya plantation is a defining national asset and one of the largest planted forests on the continent. It shapes Malawi's timber processing and its forestry policy conversation.
- Tobacco curing is a distinctive and very large fuelwood demand. It has driven both woodlot planting and pressure on natural woodland, and it makes eucalyptus a genuinely commercial smallholder crop in tobacco districts.
- Population density is high and holdings are small, which pushes most growers toward boundary planting, agroforestry and small woodlots rather than blocks.

- Whether your planting needs any permit or registration, and whether the species is restricted.
- Setbacks from watercourses, wetlands and lakeshores. Several countries in the region restrict or prohibit eucalyptus near water, and the rules have changed more than once.
- Harvesting and timber movement documentation — usually required for commercial volumes.
- Whether an environmental assessment is triggered at your scale.
- Land tenure, resolved in writing before planting. Trees are visible, immovable and take years; disputes surface when the crop becomes valuable.
