DR Congo holds an enormous natural forest estate, but its plantation sector is small and serves two very specific demands: fuelwood and charcoal around large cities, and mining timber in the south.

Around Kinshasa, plantations on the Batéké plateau — notably acacia-based systems — supply an enormous charcoal market. In Haut-Katanga, eucalyptus serves mining and urban demand.

The opportunity here is substitution: planted wood relieving pressure on natural forest and woodland.

What Makes DR Congo Different

  • The plantation question here is not about competing with the rainforest. It is about supplying fuelwood and charcoal from planted sources so that natural forest and woodland are not cut for it. That framing matters for how projects are designed and financed.
  • Kinshasa's charcoal demand is on a scale that reshapes the surrounding landscape. Plantations on the Batéké plateau exist precisely because of it, and acacia species were chosen because they perform on very poor sandy soils.
  • Katanga's mining economy creates industrial timber demand distinct from anywhere else in the region.
  • The Kivus are a different proposition again — high altitude, steep, volcanic soils, dense population, and forestry that looks much more like Rwanda's than like the rest of DRC.
  • Practical constraints are significant. Infrastructure, transport, land tenure and, in places, security shape what is realisable far more than species choice does.

The Market

Before You Plant: Check Locally

Confirm these with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD)

  • Whether your planting needs any permit or registration, and whether the species is restricted.
  • Setbacks from watercourses, wetlands and lakeshores. Several countries in the region restrict or prohibit eucalyptus near water, and the rules have changed more than once.
  • Harvesting and timber movement documentation — usually required for commercial volumes.
  • Whether an environmental assessment is triggered at your scale.
  • Land tenure, resolved in writing before planting. Trees are visible, immovable and take years; disputes surface when the crop becomes valuable.

Why plant trees in DRC when it already has rainforest?

Because the rainforest is not what supplies Kinshasa and Lubumbashi with cooking fuel — and the pressure of that demand is what degrades woodland and forest margins.

Plantation fuelwood substitutes for wood that would otherwise be cut from natural stands. That substitution is the core rationale for plantation forestry in DRC.

What grows on the poor sandy soils of the Batéké plateau?

Acacia species, particularly Acacia auriculiformis and A. mangium, because they fix nitrogen and tolerate very low fertility where most timber species would fail.

They are grown primarily for charcoal, which is what the Kinshasa market wants.

What should I plant in Katanga?

Eucalyptus — E. camaldulensis handles the drier seasonal conditions well — for mining timber, poles, charcoal and urban fuelwood.

The mining sector's industrial timber demand is a distinctive feature of this region and worth understanding before choosing spacing and rotation.

Is forestry in the Kivus different?

Very. High altitude, steep terrain, volcanic soils and dense population make it resemble Rwandan forestry far more than the rest of DRC — small parcels, agroforestry, erosion control and highland eucalyptus species.

Species advice from the lowlands does not transfer.

How many trees per acre for charcoal production?

Close spacing, typically around 2m × 2m, giving about 1,012 trees per acre, because you are selling volume and weight rather than individual stem quality.

Short rotations and coppice regrowth are what make the economics work for fuelwood systems.
