Tree Planting in Ghana: Teak, Zones and Export Markets

Teak plantation in Ghana
The short answer for Ghana

Teak defines plantation forestry in Ghana. The transitional zone — Bono, Ahafo and the surrounding belt — has the pronounced dry season and soils that teak needs, and Ghana has an established position in teak markets.

In the humid south, gmelina, cedrela and indigenous hardwoods suit better. In the north, drought-tolerant species.

If you plant teak, understand this: pruning decides most of the value, and it cannot be done retrospectively.

Growing Zones

Ghanaian conditions vary enormously with altitude and rainfall, and species choice follows from that more than from preference.

What Makes Ghana Different

  • Teak is not one option among several here — it is the option. Ghana's transitional belt has the climate and soils for it, and there is an established supply chain, buyer base and body of local knowledge.
  • Pruning is decisive and irreversible. Teak value concentrates in clear, knot-free bole length. Unpruned teak sells for a fraction of well-pruned material, and the knots are already inside the tree by the time you notice.
  • Soil rules teak out more often than climate does. It needs deep, free-draining, near-neutral to alkaline ground. Acidic or waterlogged soil produces a slow twenty-year disappointment.
  • The humid south is a different forestry proposition entirely — higher rainfall, different species, and proximity to the natural forest estate with its own regulatory framework.
  • Tree crops matter alongside timber. Cashew in the transitional and northern zones is a significant smallholder income source and competes with timber for land.

The Market

  • Teak, export-oriented — the premium end, and the reason plantation teak is planted at all. Grade and diameter drive price steeply.
  • Domestic construction and furniture timber — gmelina, cedrela and lower-grade teak.
  • Poles — electrification and construction.
  • Fuelwood and charcoal — substantial, particularly in the savanna zones.
  • Note: export of unprocessed logs is restricted in many West African jurisdictions. Confirm the current position with the Forestry Commission before planning an export model.

Before You Plant: Check Locally

Confirm these with the Forestry Commission of Ghana

  • Whether your planting needs any permit or registration, and whether the species is restricted.
  • Setbacks from watercourses, wetlands and lakeshores. Several countries in the region restrict or prohibit eucalyptus near water, and the rules have changed more than once.
  • Harvesting and timber movement documentation — usually required for commercial volumes.
  • Whether an environmental assessment is triggered at your scale.
  • Land tenure, resolved in writing before planting. Trees are visible, immovable and take years; disputes surface when the crop becomes valuable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is teak profitable in Ghana?

It can be, and Ghana has the conditions and market position for it — but only on the right soil and only if it is pruned.

Teak needs deep, free-draining, near-neutral soil and a pronounced dry season. Value concentrates in clear knot-free stem length, so unpruned teak sells for a fraction of well-managed material.

Where does teak grow best in Ghana?

The transitional zone — Bono, Ahafo, Bono East and parts of Ashanti — where the pronounced dry season suits teak's deciduous growth rhythm and soils are generally appropriate.

Dig soil pits before committing anywhere. Soil rules teak out more often than climate does.

How long does teak take to mature in Ghana?

Twenty to twenty-five years or more for premium sawn timber, with thinnings producing saleable material from roughly the second thinning onward.

Over that horizon, secure long-term tenure matters as much as soil quality. Resolve it completely before planting.

What should I plant in southern Ghana instead of teak?

In the humid forest zone, Gmelina arborea for fast utility timber, Cedrela odorata for furniture and joinery, and indigenous species such as Terminalia for longer rotations.

Mahogany (Khaya) is high value but constrained by shoot borer, which defeats pure plantation blocks — mixed or scattered planting works better.

Can I export timber from Ghana?

Processed timber, subject to documentation and the destination's requirements. Export of unprocessed logs is restricted in many West African jurisdictions.

Confirm the current position with the Forestry Commission before contracting, and note that EU buyers now require geolocation and deforestation-free evidence.
