Forestry Consultants in Uganda — Euca Eco Consults Limited, Uganda

Forestry Consultants in Uganda

In short

Euca Eco Consults Limited is a Ugandan forestry consultancy based in Wakiso, Kampala, operating since 2014. We advise landowners, investors, NGOs and government agencies on plantation feasibility, species selection, forest inventory and valuation, silviculture, harvest planning and forest management plans across eucalyptus, pine and indigenous species.

A forestry consultant is worth engaging when the decision in front of you is expensive to reverse — choosing a species, buying land, setting a rotation, or selling standing timber. Our first consultation is free.

What Does a Forestry Consultant Actually Do?

In Uganda, most people meet forestry through a nursery, a contractor, or a timber buyer — all of whom have a commercial interest in the advice they give you. A forestry consultant is different: we are paid for judgement, not for the seedlings you buy or the logs you sell. That independence is the whole point.

Practically, a forestry consultancy engagement covers one or more of the following:

  • Land and site assessment — soil depth and texture, drainage, slope, rainfall zone, access and existing land use, plus a plain verdict on whether the site suits the species you have in mind.
  • Species and clone selection — matching Eucalyptus grandis, E. camaldulensis, GU/GC clones, Pinus caribaea, P. patula or indigenous species to the site and the market you intend to sell into.
  • Feasibility and financial modelling — establishment cost per acre or hectare, annual management cost, expected yield, rotation length and an honest internal rate of return.
  • Forest inventory and valuation — measured plots, diameter and height sampling, standing volume by grade, and a defensible value for sale, mortgage, insurance or partner reporting.
  • Silvicultural prescriptions — spacing, weeding regimes, pruning and thinning schedules, fertiliser recommendations and pest management, particularly for Leptocybe invasa in eucalyptus.
  • Harvest and marketing plans — when to cut, what to cut, extraction routes, permits and which buyer segment pays best for the product you actually have.
  • Forest management plans — the written document banks, investors, certification bodies and district forestry offices increasingly ask for.

Who Hires a Forestry Consultant in Uganda

Our clients fall into four broad groups, and the questions each brings are quite different:

Client typeTypical questionWhat we deliver
Individual landowners
2–50 acres
"I have land in Luwero. Is eucalyptus worth it, and how many trees fit?"Site visit, species recommendation, planting layout, cost and return estimate
Investors & funds
50–5,000 ha
"Does this plantation acquisition stack up at the asking price?"Technical due diligence, standing timber inventory, valuation, risk register
Project developers"We need forestry input for our ESIA and offset plan."Baseline vegetation survey, offset design, replanting programme
NGOs & agencies"We need a restoration or woodlot programme designed and monitored."Programme design, nursery specification, survival monitoring, reporting

How an Engagement Works

We keep the process short and transparent, because most clients want a decision, not a relationship with a consultancy.

  • 1. Free scoping call (day 0). Fifteen to thirty minutes on the phone or WhatsApp. You describe the land, the budget and the goal. We tell you honestly whether you need a consultant at all.
  • 2. Proposal (2–3 days). A fixed-fee written scope with deliverables, timeline and cost. No open-ended day rates unless you specifically want them.
  • 3. Field work (1–5 days on site). Soil pits, GPS boundary walk, plot measurements and photographs. You are welcome to walk with us.
  • 4. Report (1–3 weeks). A written report with maps, tables and a clear recommendation — not a literature review.
  • 5. Implementation (optional). If you want us to establish or manage the plantation, we quote separately. You are never obliged to use us for delivery.

How to Choose a Forestry Consultant — Six Checks

Uganda's forestry sector has genuine experts and a fair number of opportunists. Before you sign anything, ask:

  • Are they independent of nurseries and timber buyers? If the "consultant" also sells you the seedlings, the species advice is a sales pitch.
  • Can they show you a previous report? Redacted is fine. Vague is not.
  • Do they measure, or estimate by eye? Ask what inventory method and plot intensity they use. "We walked it" is not an inventory.
  • Do they name the person doing the field work? Ask for the CV of the forester who will actually be on your land.
  • Do they quote a fixed fee against a written scope? Open-ended arrangements drift.
  • Will they tell you not to plant? A consultant who has never advised a client against a project is selling, not advising.

Where We Work in Uganda

Our consultants are based in Wakiso, just outside Kampala, and work on sites across the country. We regularly deliver assignments in:

  • Central Uganda: Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, Mpigi, Luwero, Nakaseke, Mityana, Mubende, Kiboga, Masaka
  • Western Uganda: Hoima, Masindi, Kibaale, Kyenjojo, Kabarole (Fort Portal), Bushenyi, Mbarara, Ntoroko, Kabale
  • Northern Uganda: Gulu, Lira, Arua, Nebbi, Adjumani
  • Eastern Uganda: Jinja, Mbale, Kapchorwa, Soroti, Iganga

For sites outside Central Uganda we typically combine a desk-based review with a single mobilised field visit, which keeps travel costs down without compromising the quality of the assessment.

Why Landowners Choose Euca Eco Consults

We have spent over a decade in Uganda's plantations — not only in the good years. We have seen the gall wasp outbreaks, the poorly sited woodlots in valley bottoms, the plantations sold at a third of their value because nobody measured them, and the clones that were sold as GU7 and were not. That accumulated pattern-recognition is what you are buying.

We combine it with proper tools: GPS and GIS boundary mapping, satellite imagery for change detection, calibrated inventory plots, and financial models we will hand over so you can change the assumptions yourself.

If you want to see the underlying detail before you call, our guides on eucalyptus trees per acre, species and clone selection and forest investment returns set out the same reasoning we use in the field.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a forestry consultant cost in Uganda?

Fees depend entirely on scope. A single-site visit with a written species and layout recommendation for a smallholding is at the low end; a full inventory and valuation of several hundred hectares for a transaction is at the high end.

We quote a fixed fee against a written scope before any work starts, and the initial scoping call is free. Call +256 770 812010 and we will give you a range on the phone rather than making you wait for a proposal.

Do I need a forestry consultant for a small plot of 2 to 5 acres?

Often you do not need a full engagement — you need one good conversation. Species choice, spacing and planting season are the three decisions that determine most of the outcome on a small plot, and we will talk you through those free of charge.

Where a small plot does justify a paid visit is when the site is marginal (valley bottom, thin soil, previous failed planting) or when you are buying the land and want a view before you pay for it.

Is Euca Eco Consults a forestry company or a consultancy?

Both, but they are separately contracted. We provide independent consultancy — assessments, inventories, valuations and management plans — and we also deliver plantation establishment, management and harvesting services.

Clients are free to take the advice and use a different contractor. We quote the two separately so that the advice is never bundled into a delivery sale.

Can you value my standing trees for sale or for a bank?

Yes. We carry out measured forest inventories — systematic plots, diameter at breast height and height sampling, volume calculation by grade — and issue a valuation report with the methodology stated so it can be independently checked.

Owners routinely find that a measured inventory pays for itself several times over, because buyers price standing timber conservatively when the volume is unknown.

How quickly can you visit my site?

For sites in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and Mpigi we can usually be on the ground within a week. For upcountry sites we batch visits by region, so timing depends on our schedule in that area — typically two to three weeks.

If your decision is time-critical (a purchase deadline or a buyer's offer expiring), tell us and we will prioritise.
