Conservation Consultancy in Uganda — Euca Eco Consults Limited

Conservation Consultancy in Uganda

In short

Euca Eco Consults designs and delivers conservation work that is measured rather than announced: ecological restoration, biodiversity assessment, catchment and wetland protection, community conservation programmes, and corporate conservation partnerships.

We came to conservation through forestry, which shapes how we do it. We are interested in what survives at year five, not what was planted on launch day — because the gap between those two numbers is where most conservation budgets disappear.

What Conservation Consultancy Actually Involves

  • Baseline ecological assessment — what is actually there now: vegetation, species, condition, threats. Without this, nothing afterwards can be measured.
  • Restoration design — which species, in what mix, at what density, on which part of the site, and in what sequence.
  • Catchment and wetland protection — buffer design, riparian restoration, erosion control.
  • Biodiversity assessment and monitoring — establishing indicators that can actually be re-measured by someone else later.
  • Community conservation design — because a programme that costs local people their livelihood does not survive, whatever the ecology says.
  • Corporate conservation and offset programmes — designed to withstand scrutiny from buyers, lenders and auditors.
  • Monitoring, reporting and verification — the part that turns a project into evidence.

How We Approach It Differently

Three commitments

  • We design to survival, not to planting. Anyone can put seedlings in the ground. The question that matters is what is alive and growing in year five, and that is decided by species matching, site preparation, aftercare and whether local people have a reason to protect it.
  • We measure baselines before we start. A restoration project with no measured starting point cannot demonstrate anything, ever. This is the most common structural failure we are asked to fix.
  • We will tell you when a site does not need restoring. Some degraded land recovers faster and cheaper through assisted natural regeneration than through planting. Selling you a planting programme you do not need is not a service.

Our roots are in commercial forestry, and we think that makes us better at this rather than worse. The most durable conservation outcomes in Uganda are the ones where the land also produces something — agroforestry, buffer planting that yields fodder and stakes, woodlots that take pressure off natural forest.

Programmes that ask people to give up productive land without replacing the income tend to fail quietly, three years after the launch photographs.

Where We Work

Our team is based in Wakiso, just outside Kampala, and works across Uganda — Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, Mpigi, Luwero, Mubende, Masindi, Hoima, Mbarara, Fort Portal, Gulu and beyond — with regional assignments across East and Central Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a conservation consultancy do?

Baseline ecological assessment, restoration design, catchment and wetland protection, biodiversity assessment and monitoring, community conservation design, and corporate conservation or offset programmes.

The common thread is measurement: establishing what is there before you start, and being able to demonstrate what changed afterwards.

How is conservation different from just planting trees?

Planting is an activity. Conservation is an outcome, and the outcome is measured in what survives and functions years later.

That means species matched to the site, ground prepared properly, aftercare budgeted, and local people having a reason to protect it. Programmes that fund planting but not aftercare reliably disappoint.

Can you do biodiversity assessments for a project?

Yes — vegetation and habitat surveys, species inventories, condition assessment and the design of indicators that can be re-measured later by someone else.

This work also feeds ESIA baselines, ESG reporting and carbon project requirements, so it is worth scoping all of those together rather than doing it three times.

Do you work with companies on CSR conservation programmes?

Yes, and our main contribution is usually making them measurable. A programme that plants trees and reports the number planted proves nothing; one that reports survival at 12, 24 and 60 months proves something.

We also flag honestly when a proposed programme will not achieve what it is being described as achieving.

Do you work outside Uganda?

Our base is Wakiso, Kampala, and we take regional assignments across East and Central Africa. Species, rainfall pattern and tenure differ substantially between countries, so we say plainly where our direct experience is strongest.

For regulatory matters we always work with the national authority in the country concerned rather than assuming Ugandan practice transfers.

Conservation That Is Still There in Year Five

We design to survival and measure against a real baseline. If a site does not need restoring, we will say so.
