A biodiversity assessment establishes what is actually present on a site — habitats, vegetation, species of interest, condition and threats — and sets up indicators that can be re-measured later by someone else.

That last point is the one that matters. An assessment nobody can repeat is a snapshot, not a baseline, and it will not satisfy a lender, an auditor or a carbon validator.

What an Assessment Covers

  • Habitat mapping — what habitat types are present, where, and in what condition, mapped and geolocated.
  • Vegetation survey — systematic plots recording species, structure, cover and regeneration.
  • Species of interest — identification of protected, threatened, endemic or otherwise significant species where present.
  • Condition and threats — grazing, fire, encroachment, invasive species, hydrological change.
  • Land-cover history — satellite reconstruction of what the site was and when it changed.
  • Indicator design — a short list of things that can be measured repeatably over time.
  • Monitoring protocol — written so a different team can follow it in five years and get comparable numbers.

Scope these together. Clients routinely commission three overlapping surveys for three requirements because nobody joined them up. One properly designed assessment usually serves all four.

What Makes a Baseline Repeatable

Four things, all of which are usually missing

  • Geolocated plots. Coordinates recorded so the same plots can be found again. Without this, later surveys measure a different place.
  • A written protocol. Plot size, layout method, what was recorded and how. Detailed enough for a different team to follow.
  • Raw data retained, not just the summary. Summaries cannot be re-analysed.
  • Dated photographs from fixed points, which are underrated and extremely persuasive over time.

For specialist faunal work — detailed ornithology, herpetology, entomology, bat surveys — the right answer is a specialist, and we will say so and help you scope it rather than stretching beyond what we do well.

What is a biodiversity assessment?

A structured survey establishing what habitats and species are present on a site, in what condition, and under what pressures — mapped and recorded so it can be compared against in future.

For it to function as a baseline rather than a snapshot, the plots must be geolocated and the method written down well enough for another team to repeat.

Do I need one for an ESIA?

Ecological baseline work is a standard component of a full ESIA, and the depth required depends on the project and its setting.

Where a project sits near sensitive habitat, wetland or protected areas, expect it to be scrutinised closely.

Can one survey serve ESIA, ESG and a carbon project?

Usually yes, if it is designed that way from the start. The overlap between an ESIA ecological baseline, ESG biodiversity indicators and carbon project land-eligibility evidence is substantial.

Clients regularly pay for three overlapping surveys because nobody scoped them together. Ask for that at the outset.

How do you make sure the baseline can be re-measured?

Geolocated plots, a written protocol detailed enough for a different team to follow, retained raw data rather than only summaries, and dated photographs from fixed points.

Most assessments we are asked to build on lack at least two of those, which limits what can be demonstrated later.

Do you do animal surveys?

We cover vegetation, habitat, land-cover and site condition to a professional standard. For detailed faunal work — ornithology, herpetology, entomology, bats — the right answer is a specialist.
