The principle

Restoration is not planting. Planting is one of several tools, and often not the cheapest or most effective one.

On many degraded sites, assisted natural regeneration — protecting what is already recovering, controlling fire and grazing, and enriching the gaps — produces better results at a fraction of the cost of full replanting.

Most projects use a combination, zoned across the site. A blanket approach applied uniformly is usually a sign nobody assessed the ground.

How We Work

  • 1. Baseline. Vegetation, soil condition, hydrology, existing regeneration, threats, land use and who uses the land. Recorded and mapped so it can be compared against later.
  • 2. Land-cover history. Satellite imagery showing what the site was and when it changed. This frames what "restored" should even mean here.
  • 3. Zoning. Which parts need protection only, which need enrichment, which need full replanting, and which should be left as productive land.
  • 4. Species selection. Matched to soil, hydrology and altitude, weighted toward locally occurring species where the objective is ecological.
  • 5. Implementation. Site preparation, sourcing, planting into established rains, protection.
  • 6. Aftercare. Weeding, beating up, fire protection, grazing control. Budgeted for three years minimum, because this is where restoration succeeds or fails.
  • 7. Monitoring. Survival and condition at 6, 12, 24 and 60 months, against the baseline.

Why Restoration Projects Fail

Five recurring causes

  • Funded for planting, not for aftercare. The commonest and most avoidable. Budgets that end at planting day produce sites that look restored for one season.
  • No baseline. Nothing can be demonstrated, so the project cannot prove value and does not get renewed.
  • Wrong species for the site, chosen for availability or symbolism rather than ecology.
  • Fire and grazing not addressed. On most degraded African landscapes these are the actual reasons the site is degraded. Planting into them without changing them repeats the failure.
  • Local people excluded. If restoration removes access to something people need without replacing it, protection lasts as long as the project vehicle is on site.

What is ecological restoration?

Assisting the recovery of a degraded, damaged or destroyed ecosystem — which may or may not involve planting. Protecting existing regeneration, excluding fire and grazing, and enriching gaps are all restoration.

The measure of success is ecological function and survival over years, not the number of seedlings planted.

Is planting always the best way to restore land?

No, and this is the most useful thing we tell clients. On sites with living rootstock, nearby seed sources and recoverable soil, assisted natural regeneration often produces better results at a fraction of the cost.

Full replanting is for severely degraded ground where natural recovery genuinely cannot happen.

How long does restoration take?

Visible vegetation cover can return within a few years, but ecological function — soil, hydrology, species composition — takes far longer, and on some sites decades.

We design and report against a five-year horizon as a minimum, because that is the point at which you can tell whether it worked.

How much does restoration cost?

It depends overwhelmingly on which approach the site needs. Assisted natural regeneration on a recoverable site costs a fraction of full replanting on destroyed ground.

The cost people consistently underestimate is aftercare. A budget that ends at planting day will not deliver restoration, whatever it spends on seedlings.

Can restored land still be productive?

Often yes, and where people depend on the land it usually must be. Agroforestry, buffer planting that yields fodder and stakes, and woodlots that take pressure off natural forest all combine production with recovery.

Programmes that ask people to surrender productive land without replacing the income tend to fail a few years after launch.
