How Many Pine Trees Per Acre in Uganda? Spacing, Thinning & Yield

At 3m × 3m — the standard commercial spacing for pine in Uganda — you plant about 450 pine trees per acre, which is 1,111 per hectare.

At 2.5m × 2.5m it is about 647 per acre (1,600/ha); at 4m × 4m about 253 per acre (625/ha).

Unlike eucalyptus, pine is normally thinned during the rotation. You plant more stems than you intend to harvest, then remove the poorest to concentrate growth on the best.

Pine in Uganda — overwhelmingly Pinus caribaea, with some P. patula at higher altitude — is a different proposition from eucalyptus. It is a longer game, aimed at sawn timber rather than poles, and it demands a management step most smallholders never budget for: thinning.

Calculate any spacing yourself: trees per acre = 4,047 ÷ (spacing A × spacing B in metres). For hectares, use 10,000 instead of 4,047.

As with eucalyptus, deduct 5–15% from gross area for firebreaks, extraction roads and boundary setbacks before ordering seedlings. Firebreaks matter more for pine than for eucalyptus — pine litter is highly flammable and a pine block that burns at year eight is a total loss, not a setback.

Why Pine Is Planted Wider Than Eucalyptus

Two reasons, both economic:

  • The target product is bigger. Eucalyptus poles need diameter measured in centimetres and can be cut at five to eight years. Pine sawlogs need substantially more diameter, which means each tree needs more growing space for longer.
  • The rotation is longer. Fifteen to twenty years versus five to eight. Over that period, competition between closely planted stems does far more damage — suppressing diameter growth on every tree rather than sorting winners from losers.

There is a counter-argument for planting tighter and thinning hard: closer initial spacing encourages the trees to shed lower branches naturally, producing cleaner, knot-free timber. That is a genuine forestry rationale, but it only works if you actually carry out the thinning. Which brings us to the problem.

Thinning: The Step Most Ugandan Growers Skip

This is the single biggest difference between a pine block that pays and one that disappoints, and it is where most smallholder pine in Uganda goes wrong.

Thinning means removing a proportion of the stand — the poorest, most crooked, most suppressed trees — so the remaining trees have room to put on diameter. A typical regime on a 3m × 3m planting looks something like:

Timings are indicative and vary with site quality, altitude and species — a good site in Bunyoro will run ahead of a poor one, and a site-specific prescription is worth having.

Why thinning gets skipped — and what it costs

  • The first thinning often produces material with little or no market value, so it feels like paying to destroy your own trees.
  • Growers who skip it end up at year fifteen with a stand of uniformly thin stems, none of which reach sawlog dimensions.
  • The result is a fifteen-year investment that yields low-grade material at a fraction of the expected price.
  • Budget for thinning at planting. If you cannot afford to thin, plant wider from the start — 3m × 4m or 4m × 4m — and prune instead.

Which Pine to Plant in Uganda

  • Pinus caribaea (Caribbean pine) — the dominant commercial pine in Uganda. Suits the low to mid-altitude conditions of most of the country, grows well on a range of soils including relatively poor ones, and supplies the construction and furniture markets.
  • Pinus patula — performs better at higher altitude and in cooler conditions, so it appears in the western and eastern highlands. Generally finer-grained timber.
  • Pinus oocarpa — present in some Ugandan plantings, often alongside caribaea.

Pine has a real advantage over eucalyptus on poorer, more acidic and shallower soils, where it will produce a crop on land that would not carry a decent eucalyptus stand. If your site assessment comes back marginal for eucalyptus, pine is the question to ask next.

Rotation Length and What to Expect

Pine in Uganda is a fifteen-to-twenty-year proposition to sawlog size, with thinnings providing some intermediate return from the second thinning onward. That horizon has three practical consequences:

  • It suits patient capital and land you will still own. Tenure security matters far more over twenty years than over seven.
  • Fire protection is not optional. Maintained firebreaks and a fire plan for every dry season. Pine litter carries fire readily and a mature block represents fifteen years of accumulated investment.
  • Pine does not coppice. Unlike eucalyptus, once you clear fell you must replant. Budget re-establishment into the model rather than assuming a second free rotation.

Does pine coppice like eucalyptus?

Eucalyptus coppices vigorously, giving two or three rotations from a single planting. This is a material difference in the financial model and is frequently overlooked when the two species are compared.
