Eucalyptus vs Pine in Uganda: Which Actually Pays More?

The short answer

Eucalyptus pays sooner. Pine tolerates worse ground. That is most of it.

Eucalyptus gives a saleable crop at 5–8 years and coppices for a second and third rotation with no establishment cost. Pine takes 15–20 years, must be thinned, must be replanted — but will produce a crop on shallow, acidic ground where eucalyptus will not.

The Question That Settles It

Before comparing returns, answer this: what is the rooting depth and pH of your site?

  • Deep, free-draining, moderately fertile, slightly acidic to neutral → eucalyptus. It will outperform pine on both speed and total return.
  • Shallower, more acidic, poorer, or previously exhausted → pine. Eucalyptus on such ground produces thin stems no pole buyer wants, and the fast rotation you were counting on does not materialise.
  • Waterlogged → neither. And it may be legally protected. See eucalyptus and water.

Cash Flow Is the Real Difference

Same land, very different money profiles

  • Eucalyptus: spend in year 0–1, receive at year 6, spend almost nothing, receive again at year 12 and 18. Capital recycles.
  • Pine: spend in year 0–1, spend again on thinning at years 6–9 (usually earning nothing), receive modestly at years 11–14, receive properly at year 17. Then pay establishment again.
  • The pine thinning that earns nothing is where most Ugandan pine blocks fail. It feels like paying to destroy your own trees, so it gets skipped, and the sawlog crop never arrives.
  • If you cannot fund thinning, do not plant pine at standard spacing. Plant wider and prune, or plant eucalyptus.

The Coppice Advantage Nobody Prices

Eucalyptus regrows from the cut stump. Rotations two and three skip land clearing, pitting, seedlings and planting labour entirely — usually the largest block of establishment cost. Their economics are materially better than rotation one.

Most comparisons ignore this because they model a single rotation. Over a twenty-year horizon, a eucalyptus block delivering three coppice rotations against a pine block delivering one crop plus a replant is a different comparison from the one people run. Model both properly in the calculator — run eucalyptus rotations two and three with establishment set to zero.

Why Many Growers Run Both

On holdings with enough land, the sensible answer is not either-or:

  • Eucalyptus on the better ground for cash flow at year six, funding everything else.
  • Pine on the thin, acidic ridges that would not carry a decent eucalyptus stand anyway.
  • The eucalyptus harvest at year six pays for the pine thinning at year seven — which is precisely the operation that otherwise gets skipped.

That sequencing is the single most useful structural idea for a mixed holding, and almost nobody plans it deliberately.

Which is more profitable in Uganda, eucalyptus or pine?

On good ground, eucalyptus — it produces a saleable crop in five to eight years and coppices for two or three rotations without establishment cost, so capital recycles far faster.

On shallow, acidic or poorer ground, pine wins by default, because eucalyptus there produces thin stems that never reach pole grade. Your soil usually decides this before price does.

Can I plant eucalyptus on poor soil?

You can plant it, but it will disappoint. Eucalyptus wants deeper, free-draining, moderately fertile ground; on thin or exhausted soil it produces stunted stems and the fast rotation does not materialise.

Pine tolerates those conditions and will produce a crop where eucalyptus will not. That is pine's real advantage.

Why do so many Ugandan pine blocks disappoint?

Thinning. The first thinning at years six to nine usually produces material with little or no value, so it feels like paying to destroy your own trees, and it gets deferred and then skipped.

The result at year fifteen is uniformly thin stems, none of which reach sawlog diameter. It is entirely preventable and entirely unrecoverable.

Does eucalyptus really give free second and third crops?

Not free, but far cheaper. Coppice rotations skip clearing, pitting, seedlings and planting labour — usually the largest block of establishment cost. You still pay for shoot thinning, weeding and protection.

Most eucalyptus-vs-pine comparisons ignore this entirely because they model a single rotation.

Which is riskier?

Pine carries longer exposure — fifteen to twenty dry seasons of fire risk on an increasingly valuable asset, and a much longer tenure commitment. Its litter layer also carries fire more readily.

Eucalyptus carries pest risk from gall wasp and more competition-driven quality risk if spacing and weeding are wrong. Neither is dramatically riskier; they fail in different ways.
