Best Eucalyptus Species and Clones for Uganda (GU7, GC, Grandis & More)
For most of central Uganda — Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, Mpigi, Luwero, Mubende — the best eucalyptus for commercial poles is Eucalyptus grandis, or a GU (grandis × urophylla) or GC (grandis × camaldulensis) clone where good clonal stock is available.
For drier areas such as parts of northern and north-eastern Uganda, use E. camaldulensis or a GC clone. For high altitude above roughly 1,800m — Kabale, Kapchorwa — E. globulus performs better than grandis.

There are over 700 eucalyptus species worldwide. Perhaps six matter commercially in Uganda, and in practice most growers are choosing between three. Best Species by Ugandan Ecological Zone
Uganda is not one growing environment. Altitude, rainfall pattern and soil vary enormously between Wakiso and Kabale, and species that thrive in one will underperform in the other.

Altitude and rainfall matter more than district lines, and Uganda has plenty of microclimates. A valley in Mubende can behave like Masindi and a ridge in Wakiso can be surprisingly dry. If your site sits on a boundary between zones, get it assessed rather than guessing — species choice is not reversible for seven years.

The Five Species That Matter in Uganda
1. Eucalyptus grandis — the default
The most widely planted commercial eucalyptus in central Uganda, and for most growers the right answer. It grows exceptionally fast on deep, fertile, well-drained soils with reliable rainfall, produces straight stems with good form, and reaches utility pole dimensions in roughly five to eight years depending on site quality and management.
Its weakness is that it is genuinely demanding. On thin soils, on waterlogged ground, or through an extended dry spell, grandis suffers visibly while camaldulensis nearby carries on. If your site is anything less than good, be honest about that before choosing it.
2. Eucalyptus camaldulensis — the survivor
The river red gum, and Uganda's workhorse for drier and harsher sites. Slower and generally less straight than grandis, but far more tolerant of drought, poorer soils and periodic waterlogging. It produces dense wood that makes excellent firewood and charcoal, and it coppices vigorously — meaning repeat harvests from the same stumps without replanting.
If you have marginal land in northern Uganda or a dry ridge anywhere, this is usually the species that will actually deliver a crop.
3. Eucalyptus saligna — the middle ground
Closely related to grandis and often confused with it in nurseries. Broadly similar growth and form, with slightly more tolerance of drier spells. A sensible choice at mid elevations and on sites where grandis is borderline.
4. Eucalyptus globulus — for the highlands
The blue gum. It needs cool conditions and performs best above roughly 1,800m — Kabale, Kisoro, Kapchorwa. At low altitude it grows poorly and is not worth planting. Where it suits, it yields high-quality timber and is a familiar sight around highland homesteads.
5. Eucalyptus urophylla — mostly as a parent
Rarely planted pure in Uganda, but important as one half of the GU hybrid. It brings adaptability, disease tolerance and vigour to the cross, which is why GU clones perform across a wider range of sites than pure grandis.
Clones: GU, GC, and What "GU7" Actually Means
Clonal eucalyptus has spread rapidly in East Africa over the last two decades, and Ugandan growers now routinely encounter codes like GU7, GU8, GC540 and GC796 in nursery price lists. Here is what they mean:
- GU = E. grandis × E. urophylla. Bred for vigorous growth with broader site tolerance than pure grandis. The mainstream choice on good to moderate sites.
- GC = E. grandis × E. camaldulensis. Combines grandis growth with camaldulensis drought tolerance. The choice for drier or more marginal ground.
- The number — the 7 in GU7, the 540 in GC540 — identifies a specific selected individual, propagated vegetatively so that every plant is a genetic copy. It is a catalogue reference, not a quality grade. GU8 is not "better than" GU7; it is a different selection that may suit a different site.
What a clone actually buys you
- Uniformity. Every tree grows at a similar rate, so the stand matures together and harvesting is simpler and cheaper.
- Predictability. Rotation length and yield can be estimated with far more confidence than from seedling stock of unknown parentage.
- Higher volume on the right site. Well-matched clones outperform average seedling stock, sometimes substantially.
- But: matched to site, or nothing. A clone selected for one environment planted in another can underperform ordinary seedlings. Clones are precision instruments, and precision cuts both ways.

Our practical position: on a good, uniform, properly assessed site with a commercial block of a few hectares or more, clones usually justify the premium. On a small, variable smallholding, or where the site has not been assessed, good seedling stock from a reputable nursery is often the better risk-adjusted buy.
Pests: The Gall Wasp Question
The most significant eucalyptus pest in Uganda is Leptocybe invasa, the blue gum chalcid or eucalyptus gall wasp. It induces galls on young shoots and leaf stalks, stunting growth and in heavy infestations killing young trees outright. It has affected plantings across East Africa.
Three practical implications for species choice:
- Susceptibility differs between species and clones. Ask any nursery selling you clonal material what its tolerance record is. A supplier who cannot answer is a supplier to be wary of.
- Monoculture concentrates the risk. A whole block of one clone shares one vulnerability. On larger holdings, consider planting more than one clone or leaving some seedling-grown material in the mix.
- Monitor in the first two years. Galling on young shoots is visible if you look. Early detection allows replanting decisions while they are still cheap.

Useful when talking to nurseries, landowners and buyers upcountry, where the Luganda name is often the only one used:

How to Buy Seedlings Without Getting Burned
Mislabelled clonal stock is a genuine problem in the East African nursery market. Someone paying a clone premium for seedling-grown material will not discover it for two or three years, by which point there is no remedy. Before you pay:
- Ask where the mother material came from. A legitimate clonal nursery can tell you the source of its stock plants. An evasive answer is the answer.
- Look at uniformity in the nursery bed. True clonal stock is visibly even — same height, same leaf, same vigour. Variation in a bed labelled as one clone means it is not one clone.
- Check the roots, not the shoot. Root-bound or spiralled roots never recover in the field, however healthy the top looks. Tall seedlings in small pots are a warning sign, not a bonus.
- Buy in the planting window. Stock held too long in the nursery deteriorates. Order to a planting date, not in advance of one.
- Get an independent opinion on a large order. For anything above a few thousand plants, a nursery inspection costs a fraction of the order value and routinely pays for itself.

Does eucalyptus really use too much water?
Eucalyptus is a fast-growing genus and fast growth requires water — that much is simply true. The problem in Uganda has been siting rather than the tree itself: eucalyptus planted in wetlands, on riverbanks and in valley bottoms causes real hydrological and regulatory problems.
Planted on appropriate upland sites with proper setbacks from watercourses and wetland margins, it is a legitimate and productive land use. Setbacks are also a legal matter in Uganda, not merely good practice — check before planting near any watercourse.
