Tree Seedling Prices in Uganda: What Each Species Costs
Seedling-grown eucalyptus and pine commonly fall in the region of UGX 300–900 per plant. Verified clonal eucalyptus (GU and GC) carries a substantial premium, typically UGX 800–2,500. Indigenous species run higher again.
Seedlings are the smallest line in a plantation budget with the largest leverage on outcome. A few hundred shillings a plant is trivial against replanting a failed block two years later.

What the Clone Premium Actually Buys
- Uniformity — the stand matures together, which makes harvesting simpler and cheaper.
- Predictability — rotation length and yield can be estimated with real confidence.
- Known pest tolerance — particularly relevant for gall wasp.
- Higher volume on a matched site — the operative words being matched site.

Why the Cheapest Seedling Is Rarely the Cheapest Outcome
What you are actually paying for
- Root condition. A spiralled or pot-bound root system never straightens. The tree stays unstable and stunted for life, and you will not know why in year three. Tip a plant out and look before you pay.
- Genetic identity. With clonal stock you are paying specifically to know what you are planting. Mislabelled material is a real problem and you find out three years later.
- Hardening off. Stock raised under permanent shade and moved straight to open field suffers badly.
- Timing. Nursery prices firm as the rains approach. Order early against a planting date — but collect to that date, not before.

How Many to Order, and When
Order against measured area, not the title figure:
- Apply your spacing — 647 per acre at 2.5m × 2.5m, 450 at 3m × 3m
- Deduct 5–15% for firebreaks, roads and boundary setbacks
- Add back about 5% as beating-up stock
On one acre at standard spacing that is roughly 610 plants, not 647. Full working in trees per acre.

Why are clonal seedlings so much more expensive?
You are paying for genetic identity: uniformity, predictable rotation and known pest tolerance. Clonal material is propagated vegetatively from selected stock plants, which costs more to produce.
The premium pays on a good, uniform, properly assessed site. On a small or variable smallholding it often does not.
Can I get free seedlings in Uganda?
Sometimes. District forestry offices, NFA nurseries and tree-planting programmes do supply seedlings free or subsidised, particularly to institutions, but availability is seasonal and limited.
Ask early, and inspect what you are given. Free stock that is pot-bound is not a saving.
How do I know if seedlings are good quality?
Tip one out of its pot and look at the roots — you want white, actively growing roots, not a dense spiral circling the pot wall. Spiralled roots never recover.
Then check for stocky rather than tall-and-thin growth, no galls on leaf midribs, evidence of hardening off, and uniformity across the whole bed rather than just the plants shown to you.
