What Does It Cost to Plant an Acre of Trees in Uganda?
There is no single number, and any contractor who gives you one without seeing the land is guessing. Land clearing alone swings the total by a factor of three or more — open grassland versus dense stumped bush is not a rounding difference.
What we can give you is the complete line-item list, so you can price each one locally and compare quotes properly. Most first-time budgets are wrong not because the rates were wrong, but because four whole lines were missing.

Why Clearing Swings the Whole Budget
Ask three contractors for an acre price and you will get three very different numbers, and usually the difference is not margin — it is what each assumed about the land.

Always specify the land condition when you ask for a quote, and get the contractor to walk it. A per-acre price agreed by phone is a price that will be renegotiated on site.

Four Costs Beginners Forget
- Beating up. Replacing the seedlings that fail in the first weeks. Skipping it is the difference between 80% and 95% final stocking, and gaps become permanent yield loss.
- Year-one weeding, two to three rounds. The single highest-return operation in the whole rotation and the one most often cut when money is tight. Grass competition in year one costs growth you never recover.
- Firebreak maintenance every dry season. Not a one-off at establishment — an annual line for the life of the crop.
- The inventory before you sell. Years away, but it belongs in the model, because unmeasured timber is priced defensively by buyers and the inventory routinely pays for itself several times over.
The rule that saves the most money
- If you cannot afford to weed it for a year, do not plant it yet.
- An unweeded block is not a slower crop. Very often it is not a crop at all — it is thin stems that only the charcoal trade will take.
- Plant fewer acres properly rather than more acres badly. Two well-managed acres beat five neglected ones on every measure.
When the Money Actually Goes Out

The pattern that catches people: the majority of the cash goes out before a single tree is saleable, and the second year feels like paying for nothing. That second year is what determines whether year seven produces poles or firewood.

Getting Quotes You Can Actually Compare
Three contractors quoting "per acre" are usually quoting three different scopes. Send every one of them the same written specification:
- Measured acreage (not the title figure) and the land condition, with photographs
- Species and whether stock is seedling or clonal, and who supplies it
- Spacing and therefore trees per acre — see trees per acre
- Pit dimensions and whether fertiliser is included
- Number of weeding rounds included in year one, stated as a number
- Whether beating up is included and to what survival standard
- Firebreak cutting: included or not
- What is reported to you, and when

What is the biggest cost in establishing a plantation?
Land clearing, in almost every case, and it is also the most variable. Everything else — pitting, seedlings, planting labour — is reasonably predictable per acre.
This is why quotes vary so widely between contractors: they are assuming different things about the ground.
Can I plant trees cheaply and manage them later when I have money?
No, and this is the most expensive mistake in Ugandan smallholder forestry. Year-one weeding and prompt beating up determine most of the final outcome, and neither can be done retrospectively.
If the budget is tight, plant fewer acres properly rather than more acres badly. Two well-managed acres beat five neglected ones on every measure that matters.
Are seedlings a big part of the cost?
Smaller than most people expect, and with the largest leverage on the outcome. A few hundred shillings a plant is trivial against the cost of replanting a failed block.
The exception is clonal material, which carries a substantial premium. On a good uniform site with a commercial block that premium usually pays; on a small variable smallholding, quality seedling stock is often the better risk-adjusted buy.
How do I compare quotes from different contractors?
Send all of them the same written specification — measured acreage, land condition with photographs, species and stock type, spacing, pit size, fertiliser, number of weeding rounds, whether beating up is included and to what survival standard, and firebreaks.
Without that, three per-acre prices are three different scopes and comparing them is meaningless.
Does the cost change by district?
Yes. Labour rates, transport distance from a reputable nursery, and typical land condition all vary. Clearing costs in a district where land is mostly under cultivation differ from one where blocks come out of bush.
